Extrude honing is an extremely effective process. It produces two very
desirable results - minimum turbulence in ports and passageways and removal
of sharp edges and burrs, virtually eliminating stress cracks in casting and
forged parts. F1 teams have extrude honed the coolant and oil passages in
engines for years now. It greatly reduces the little eddy currents inside
the engine that rob horsepower and cause localized hotspots leading to
engine failures. A less sophisticated example is in Nascar. Seems a while
back the good ol' boys couldn't stop front brake rotor failures. By extrude
honing the vanes of the rotor the casting burrs and sharp corners were
removed, leaving smooth, gently radiused vanes. End of rotor explosions.
You haven't seen a rotor failure in years.

The process is especially well suited to parts where you can't get any other
sort of tool to the desired location, like an oil gallery. However, even
for accessible areas like a head port it is useful.
