MG Midget Help

My buddy's 63 MG Midget 1275cc with ribbed gearbox seems to get stuck in
2nd gear alot. He bought the rebuilt gearbox from Moss a couple of years
ago, and it has done this off and on since. Some wrench in Denver told
him "this was a common problem, just run it hard and yank hard into 3rd
and it will be ok". Does anyone out there have any sugestions for a
fix??
