Sealing compound

Listers,
  What is the best/correct stuff to use for "sealing compound" when
putting the two halfs of a Renault R-8 aluminum split case transaxle
together.  The book says there is no gasket, just "sealing compound".
Also, does anyone have one of these transaxles for sale? I think they
were called 330's?  Thanks in advance.
