By then, I think you should have been able to find some radial "takeoffs"
from a VW Beetle at a reasonable price. ISTR paying about $20 each (mounted
and balanced!) in 1975 or so. Tires were nearly new, but the Bug owner had
wanted wider ones than the factory supplied. The shop that sold upgraded
wheels & tires had lots of originals for sale cheap.
