You're right!  MIG has to have a happy combination of heat and wire feed 
speed.  The cheaper units just don't regulate these parameters as well as 
they should.  Spend a little more, and your effort will be less and the 
welds will be better.  I went for a Lincoln TIG unit, but see the EBAY 
comparison:
