My stumbling problem turned out to be too lean of a mixture, after all.
I pulled the carbs and checked the float level. They were both within spec.
Then I checked the level of the needle jets. I had replaced them when I rebuilt
the carbs. I could find no specs on where these "fixed" jets should be set,
so I set them at the same level as the original. The were at about .0625 below
the bottom of bottom of the carb bridge. Dick Taylor, on a couple of threads
from this list, had stated that his were set a .125, so this time I pressed
them down to that level. It fixed the problem!
The car idles even better than before and pulls away from a stop with no
hesitation. The plugs look more like they should, too, a light brown cocoa
color.

On another "note", I just don't seem to have the ear for tuning the carbs by
slightly raising the pistons. I can never tell if the idle changes one way or
the other. Wonder if there's any connection between that and being tone deaf.
I never could tune a guitar either!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
