That's really all it does, is cover the hole in the block.  Leaving some of
the gasket exposed might be OK, but it must cover the hole.  If you've ever
seen one of those dishwasher demonstrations with the see-through door,
you'll have some idea of what goes on in your crankcase ... the smallest
hole will throw oil all over the place.
