Before the twine they used "cow magnets". Large cylindrical magnets,
(about 3/4 in diameter and approximately 3 inches in length with fully
radiused ends), very strong. These were "fed" to the cows and they
captured these pieces so they did minimal or no damage to the animals - You
used to be able to buy them from Edmund Scientific years ago, and we used
them in magnetometers as well back then
