Perhaps you have heard this from others... but it is quite possible that 
one or both of the seals in the half-axle have failed allowing wheel 
grease &/or diff oil to find its way to the drums.  I would clean 
everything up (including the shoes) and drive a bit then check for more 
grease or oil.  If no more oil... lucky you.  If yes, then you will 
probably want to get at those seals (unlucky you).

Either way, you will want new shoes before you do any real driving... 
using the cleaned-up ones is only justifiable (IMO) long enough to see 
if you have a leak.  They will never be good after the soaking they've 
had and if the friction material is glued rather than riveted to the 
metal backing the oiling they got may cause them to come unglued (that's 
what happened to mine inconveniently far from home).
