 An "Interference"  engine is when the piston & valve  can come in 
contact . This can occur when the crank & valve go out of sync either 
during a mechanical failure or over reving. That's one of the reasons 
that many engines with timing belts recommend replacement at regular 
intervals to avoid engine damage.
