I actually just did this in preparation for my transmission transplant this
Sat. I haven't installed it and certainly haven't driven with it, but it
seems to have worked out fine.  I used a 1/4 inch bolt. First I picked a
drill bit a size smaller than 1/4" because the instructions I have said it
had to be very tight. But that was too tight and the next size up in my box
of Crayolas was 1/4 which it turns out is an "easy" fit. If I had been
thinking before saying "well this is only a tad larger" I would have planned
on freezing the bolt overnight before installing it. But if I thought that
one through, I might have nixed the idea on the premisses that I might want
to get the bolt out of there one day.  I also got a grade 8 bolt with a
shaft to extend all the way through the fork with no threads inside (was it
a 2 1/2 inch, I think?) although it is a tad too long so I will have to use
a flat washer at the head and a split washer behind the nut.

The hole, BTW, was drilled perpendicular to the pin in the center of the
fork and, of course, I put the pin in nice and firm while drilling to make
sure that it all lined up right - leave it to me to get that wrong.

The other thing I was told is that the standard pin breaks because the ones
that came originally were not strong enough and/or because people tend to
overtighten them. About 20#'s I was told is about right, and of course wire
it in place.

The other thing I did was replace the "pins fork to sleeve" (per the Moss
catalog). That is pretty cheap insurance while it's apart. Let me know if
you want to hear that story.
