Why not find out why it's leaking instead ?  Even with the carbs set way
rich, they shouldn't be releasing raw gas into the air, so the mixture
adjustment has nothing to do with the smell.

Not sure what you think a bog sounds like, but SUs do have a rather
distinctive sound to them. Might be what you're hearing is normal.

Fix the leak first, then worry about performance.

At least for me, finding the leak is usually the easy part.  Just look for
the wet or stain near anything with fuel in it.  The cork jet seals are a
common leak point, so are the rubber float bowl mounts.  Then of course
there's leaking float valves for a variety of reasons, usually crud caught
in the valve or someone using "Grosse jet" valves.  If your fuel pump is not
stock, check your fuel pressure carefully.  The SU float valves won't hold
back much and high pressure causes the level in the bowl to be higher than
designed.
