What's interesting is how it's always someone else's fault ... Lazer cams
conveniently neglects to mention that they are now using Japanese steel made
from inferior and/or recycled ore.

Yeah, *they* didn't change the materials ... it might have the same ANSI
number on the label (or more likely the "equivalent" JIS number) ... but
unless the steel is from the _same batch_ they've been using for 20 years,
it's bound to be at least slightly different.  Just like with motor oil API
number, the specs aren't the entire story.  Where is their micro-assay data
to prove it's the same ?  Even just a few atoms of the wrong (or right)
element can alter the properties.  Much easier to point the finger at "the
automakers" ... who oddly enough don't seem to have any trouble making cams
that live with modern oil ...

And not surprisingly, a spot check of two motor oil maker's specifications
fails to show the reported reduction in zinc ... both Valvoline All Climate
and Chevron Delo 400 still have .11%, same as reported by Ed Hackett ten
years ago.
