I think TR2-4 front suspension Trunnions are fine with grease while TR4A-6
Trunnions require oil because the earlier style Vertical Link has a 'threaded
portion' that goes into the trunnion almost twice as far as the newer style.
Then add heavier motors, larger wheels & tires, and revised suspension
geometry and these late 'shallow' trunnions take a beating.
If I had a TR4A-6 I would oil the trunnions often!

2. Why are these things oiled rather than greased?
There are several possible reasons ... take your pick :
1) The factory said to use gear oil.
Why did they say that ? Don't know for sure, here are two theories :
2) Gear oil doesn't dry out the way old British grease did.
3) Gear oil has a recirculating effect that helps flush wear particles away
from the contact surfaces, resulting in longer life.
