overdrive? Is it only worth doing when you need to replace the transmission
anyway? Or are there no longterm problems caused by cruising at highway
speeds with the regular transmission?

If you buy a ready to use overdrive transmission then it is just a
transmission swap. About the same amount of work involved in changing out
a clutch. Since you have a 74 model you can use either the A or J-type and
since the J-type are easier to find and have a less broad application (in
the TR world) this is what you are more likely to find. You will need the
column switch, a new switch plinth and a wire harness, all of which are
available from the parts suppliers. And a right angle speedo drive (unless
it comes with the transmission ).

I haveconverted a transmission and it is much more wirk. It requires a new
mainshaft and since almost everything is assembled to the mainshaft it
requires an almost complete teardown.
