Hi
The reason for the 6 volt coil is easy starting. The system uses a resistor
which is in series with the coil to make the total volt drop 12v, when you
turn the key the solenoid clicks in and as well as energising the starter it
bypasses the resistor to feed the coil direct from the battery, not 12
volts, usually nearer 9volts left during cranking. Therefore you are putting
9v across a 6v coil result bigger spark rather than 9v across a 12v coil
result smaller spark.
