Best explanation is in any one of the several good books on sheetmetal work
available today (look for any by Ron
Fournier, for example). But, simply, using a hard metal dolly underneath an
area and lightly hammering with a soft-head
mallet (rawhide is best, rubber less so) creates ripples in the metal which
then merge, thickening the metal in that
area. Working a dent in that way brings the area back to its original shape and
thickness. Sounds counter-intuitive, but
it works.

Cheers.
