David,
My son and I put chrome bumpers on his '80 Spit.  It required a little metal
work on the front bumper mounts but it was more cosmetic that functional.
There was a large brace that needed to be removed, it was bolted onto the
frame.  They did not spend the money to change the body or chassis, only
added some metal and the rubber.
