Thanks for the input, sorry I didn't make it clear, it does drive quite
normally out of overdrive, it is just that nothing happens for ages when
you
engage overdrive, then it is effectively neutral!
<

This means there are two problems: 1) the sprag clutch is broke and 2) the
overdrive clutch is not engaging. Either one indicates a tear-down is
necessary.

The sprag clutch (one way clutch) carries the torque during the transistion
from direct to overdrive and the cone clutch has two faces, one face is
used to lock up in direct and the other face is to lock into overdrive.
Spring pressure engages the direct clutch and hydraulic pressure overcomes
the spring pressure and locks the overdrive clutch in place. You know all
this, i'm sure, it's the same in all Laycock overdrives. And your's is
behaving as if the direct cluct is coming off but not engaging the
overdrive face. This may be due to insufficient pressure, a damaged clutch
face or burrs on the spline shaft inhibiting clutch movement.

However, the sprag clutch should carry the torque while under load even
when the direct clutch becomes disengaged although it will freewheel
off-throttle (ie. the engine will spin down to idle even when the (main)
clutch is engaged). Ive seen this on one transmission and it was toast.
Metal chunks came out with the gear oil when drained.

Sorry, old boy, but me thinks the overdrive is due for a service.

Cheers

Dave
