Is my rad cap the problem? If so what are the specs for the
rad cap? '69 Spit with 1300 hi-comp engine (original)

Stef,
A couple of ideas come to mind assuming what you've done......
1) check the radiator cap to be certain that the rubber seal that mates the
cap to the radiator filler neck is still there.....one of our TRF picnic
caravan guys had a similar problem - he didn't have a gasket/seal in his cap
- was losing coolant and running hotter than usual. Not only do you need a
proper seal between cap & rad neck for pressure control, the system won't
draw coolant back into the radiator from the overflow bottle without the cap
seal/gasket in place.
2) check your compression......hopefully it's okay.....if the check shows a
low cylinder/s, try retorquing the head per proper head bolt
sequencing.....if you haven't seen any white exhaust smoke or bubbles in the
coolant while the engine is running, you're probably okay in this department.
3) if the two ideas above are not the issues then I suppose you should look
at possibly a faulty water pump (eventhough it may not be leaking) or too
lean of a mixture.....just for kicks, get the engine warmed up in the evening
then pop the bonnet while it's still running - does the exhaust
header/manifold appear to be glowing.....like a subtle cherry red color? If
so, skip to the step to check for proper carb mixture quickly!
