Check your ground on the left side. Sounds as if the lights are grounding
improperly- i.e.- power to left taillight is flowing through the switch to
the left taillight, through the taillight filament to the common point with
the brake filament, back through the brake light filament, to the right side
brake light filament, through it to the common point with the taillight
filament and ground, allowing both taillights to function normally.  When
you hit the brake, the power flow reverses through the brakelight filament
from the ground, thus removing the groundpath flow, and essentially removing
the ground for the left side.

Either that, or the ghost of Lucas is cursing you. You may wish to consult a
certified Lucexorcist to remove the demon if this should prove to be the
case.
