first, thank you to all who helped me (alot).
there were many of you and many regulars that gave me great info.
it turned out to be simple (duh).
1. remove new front 'classic' license plate from in front of grille
(one guy suggested) and mounted it below
2. mount the radiator cowling that was missing (that was a bear)
and assure it does not fold or crunch when closing bonnet
(another guy suggested)
3. tighten loose intake manifold nuts on bottom of manifold
(another guy suggested) sure enough the middle underside nuts
were loose. tip - it's a tight 1/2" fit. swivel head for socket will
be handy.
i believe these steps above fixed it. water temp now stays below 1/2
of guage. following were other solutions that worked for others.
4. check timing, i pulled it back about 4degrees but believe i can
move it forward again. informed too advanced can run hot.
5. check mixture (used colortune) and it is just slightly rich
checked plugs - nice light brown color.
informed if lean will run hot.
6. checked valve clearances (did a spot check since i just adjusted them)
7. test water pump
method 1. take radiator cap off, watch for minimal water flow on
engine start, when temp rises and thermo opens observe good flow.
i did this and worked nicely
method 2. put longer rad hose on water pump output and put in
1 gallon bucket. put garden hose into where hose goes in radiator.
test 3 times at idle, 2000 and 3000 rpms as below.
start engine - time how long to fill bucket. shut engine, empty bucket
must see significant time difference to fill bucket between rpm else
pump not pumping... (great idea!)
8. test radiator (had a shop check it with electronic tester - dropping
right temp range across radiator. also saw good flow under cap.
9. check thermostat. i removed it and got exact same symptoms.
didn't do this below (basically because of time)
10. check for voltage drop across regulator on back of speedo
informed this will make instruments run high.
still don't know how to do the following so if you do please let me know.
11. check valve timing.
once again - thanks to all for excellent info. especially
micheal, don, paul, jim, randall, james, martin and anyone else i forgot...
