Not exactly. My 1966 MG Midget had an erector-set (some called it
"tinkertoy") frame. Take it apart after you get the top off of it. Put
both the frame pieces and the canvas in the trunk.

The TR4 has a top frame that folds back, like a convertible top with no
canvas on it. Hides behind the vinyl seat-back and a couple of side vinyl
panels. Odd compromise between a convertible and roadster that I have not
seen elsewhere. Anyone know of any other cars like this?

Yes.

Right. The seating-area vinyl covers the folded top frame. I like the
look. Not sure that it is any more convenient than a tinkertoy frame.
