I did this on my TR 4 when I repaired my old fiberglass cover. What I did 
was use strips of aluminum flashing material (about the same thickness as a 
beer can) to hold the bubble material flush. I used large head pop rivets 
through the tunnel. I didn't have any problems
with this setup. Go for it!!
