My thanks to various people who provided answers to why overdrives were in
a minority on US build. Seems the earlier Ford mechanical unit had a less than
enviable reputation. However Doug Ross crystalised the absolute difference
when he wrote:
My recollection is, that less than 10% of the cars delivered from '57
through
'63 had O/D. We could sell the hell out of white wall tires though!
THAT'S IT! LHD + Whitewalls less overdrive = North America. LHD/RHD with
overdrive and blackwalls (usually Mich X) = Everywhere else. Applicable to MG,
AH, Jaguar, Rootes Group as well as ST and proof positive in every transit
park and lumbering car transporter.
