I also have to say that I own a 76 TR6 that used to have original paint up
until a few weeks ago. The are behind the grill was painted with black
paint (my paint was very flat, which I attribute to age). Mine also
appeared to have been applied with a brush, very sloppily, I might add.

Subject: TR6 front valence paint

Does anyone on the list have a 6 in original paint? I'm trying to
find out if the section of the valence that the grill attaches to
should be black or body colour. Its not that I'm completely obsessed
with originality as much as I'm puzzled by a recent discovery....

Just before my 6 was due to have the normal satin black areas painted
I was looking through photos of the old body being stripped, I
noticed this area of valence was also in black & rang the garage to
remind them to paint that as well. Later someone asked me for some
old pictures of the car prior to its theft, and one caught my eye. It
showed the front of the car straight after a respray in '85; no black
paint. I had assumed that the TR specialists who had done the respray
had painted this black but obviously not...I know I didn't, so
someone in the 14 years the car was missing decided to take the grill
off and spray black behind it.

Why? Were they obsessed with originality? Seems very strange,
especially as there was only a couple of thousand miles added to the
clock...

I don't believe this was part of the disguise, (change of TR6 logo,
coach stripe). But now I can't help wondering what is original -
photos are little help as the most obvious area of paint is usually
in shadow from the bonnet, and cars showing colour could easily have
been painted. Anyone know for sure?
