If the car is on jack stands you won't see RPM's change so much as the
MPH's. Since there is no load on the engine the bulk of the load is pumping
losses in the engine itself and the RPM is mostly a matter of throttle
position.  When the OD engages the RPM's stay the same but the MPH's will
jump up.
