Paul,

To check this out, you're right, the interior tranny cover has to come
out. From what you've written, I'm not sure exactly why/how/when your
problem first developed. If this problem just developed then I'd
suspect a faulty switch. A simple lamp test or ohm meter will help sort
that out. If it's always performed in this manner and you're not sure
of the pedigree of the tranny/od, then it could be internal and I have
another suggestion before you go too far.

Before you disassemble the top cover, remove the inhibitor switch. Put
the gear lever back on and with some good light look down into the
switch hole. The 3/4 selector rod, the middle one, should have a very
obvious notch cut out in it. This notch deactivitates the switch in
it's neutral position and when the gear lever is pushed into 3rd or 4th,
the notch moves out of the way thus actuating the switch. If there's no
notch then somewhere along the tranny's life the top cover may have been
replaced or overhauled with the wrong gear selector rod. At this point
you'll have to decide where you want to go with it; live with it and be
careful of reverse or fix it.

An un-notched rod can be adapted but the top cover will have to be
disassembled. Mark the location of the notch through the switch hole
before you take it apart. You'll need a grinder to make the notch just
like the one for the reverse lamp switch.

To answer your only question directly, a paper gasket is available in
the States so you ought to be able to get one in SA. A little sealant
on both sides will do the trick.

Here's hoping I misunderstood your situation, and with a little winded
response,

Cheers,

Gary
