Sorry for the late entry into this one but I'll add my $.02 anyway. I fit the crank, rear oil seal and rear plate while the engine is on the bench, then mount the engine on the stand using the rear plate bolt holes. This allows a bit more room to attach the the engine stand arms and you can use 2 3/8" bolts. It's also easier to balance the engine on the stand with the crank installed.
