Carb Adjustment

Listers,

I thought that the carbs on my 62 TR3B were running too rich based on
the following:  poor gas mileage (1/3 tank of premium with lead added
per ~100 miles), black soot on exhaust pipe, gas smell in garage after
running (gas tank without holes). I have done the following:  replaced
rotor, condenser, points (appropriately gapped), and spark plugs (all
plugs were black upon withdrawal). I then used the Uni-syn air flow
device to adjust the airflow, although I must admit I find the whole
adjustment with that a bit odd.  For example as you adjust the first
carb to get the float half-way up the chamber, how do you know that
the carb is alright to begin with?  Anyway, adjusted both carbs (at
warm engine temp).  The idle rpm at this point was about 1000-1200.  I
then made both carbs maximum lean and backed off 2 full turns of the
mixture nut, attached the Colortune device to cylinder # 1.  I was not
able to get the Colortune anywhere near blue by turning the mixture
nut all the way lean nor all the way rich on carb # 1.  In the all the
way lean position, I was able to get the color blue by lifting the
carb piston with a screwdriver.  However, to adjust the throttle screw
to get the color blue required 3000 rpm.  Therefore, I just left the
carb all the way lean. I then moved the Colortune to cylinder #4 and
worked on carb 2.  I was able to adjust the mixture nut to get a blue
color on this one.  I then made it one-half flat lean and reattached
the air filters.  It just so happens that I used carb # 2 for the air
flow adjustment initially. The adjustment on carb # 2 was leaner than
when I started. After all these adjustments, the idle rpm is now about
1700-1800.  If I adjust the idle back down, I cannot keep carb #2 in
the Colortune blue range.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here?  Do the carbs
(# 1, # 2 or both) need to be rebuilt at this point? I have not
adjusted the floats yet, would that have a bearing on the inability to
get carb # 1 into the blue range?

I hope I have explained this in an understandable fashion. Any advice
as to what to consider doing next, would as always be greatly
appreciated.
