Can't help you with your door check strap problem, but the manifold water
connection is to HEAT the manifold, not cool it.  It is heated so that the
fuel/air mixture, traveling at low velocities (like mild acceleration and
low speed cruising) stays atomized and doesn't condense in larger drops on
the walls of the inlet manifold.  The heating provides better drivability
in the low and mid power range.  if you bypass the manifold heating, and
don't change anything else, you may experience surging, and hesitation upon
light to average acceleration and slightly increased fuel consumption.
