Since it's a fact that your reactions slow as you get older, I'd say
it's more likely he very prudently realized that his car (which sounds
as though it could eat a stock AC Cobra for lunch) was simply too
wickedly fast for him.  

Now, if I only had $20,000 lying around ... <g>
