Hi Hal,

Triumphs don't have VIN's, they have commission numbers (at least until
1980). TR4A #s begin at CTC50000 in January of 1965 and end July 1967 at
around CTC78684. Solid axle TR4A's begin with CT. But don't try to tell that
to DMV. They won't understand.

Near the brake and clutch master cylinder there should be a plate riveted to
the shelf with your commission number. In my experience, this is the number
used by states as a "VIN."

So, what do you mean when you say "the state of New York says my vin is
d511580." Sounds like a title number, not a vin.... better get it
straightened out. It can cause trouble later.

To bring your 4A back to life:

1: Squirt some light penetrant like Kroil, Liquid Wrench, or Kerosene down
each spark plug hole. Let sit overnight. Try and turn the engine over by
hand. If you're lucky it should turn over by hand (with no spark plugs and
out of gear).

2. Squirt some motor oil down each spark plug hole. Turn it over a few times
by hand. Let it sit a few hours. Turn it over by hand again.

3. Change the oil and coolant. Make sure all hoses are in good shape.

4. Drain out any old gas. Flush the lines as best you can. Clean up the
carbs with gumout or some such, get all the old gas out of them. Put some
new gas in the tank. The fuel pump is on the driver side of the engine,
lower rear. It's got a little glass bowl and mesh strainer. Clean them out.
If your lucky, you'll have an original style fuel pump with lever on the
side. That's a priming lever. Move it up and down and it will pump gas to
the carbs and fill the float bowls. Keep pumping until it doesn't seem to
be doing anything anymore. If not, no big deal. You'll just have to crank
longer.

5. Charge the battery or put a new one in. Choke. START HER UP!

Good luck!
