Hi Dave,
What's the condition of the trunnions? Since the trunnions are brass, they
wear excessively if not kept well greased.
Run the trunnions all the way onto the spindle and check for any sloppiness.
If the trunnion rocks, you should replace them.  
I'm also in the process of a frame up and when I rebuilt my '60 TR-3A
suspension this past summer, I noticed excessive movement in the suspension
when I rocked the chassis with the wheels on the ground. After some
investigation it turned out to be the steering idler and the ball
joints.......but it could have as easily been the trunnions.
I did bead blast all the aluminum engine parts, though.....I used steel wool
on the brass trunnions
