Jim,
It will be noticeably slower off the line, and passing etc. with the 3.27
rear end.  The gear ratios for the tranny itself are the same whether
overdrive is fitted or not.  This is what I had in my GT6+ before adding
the overdrive.  When I did the conversion I also changed the rear end ratio
to the correct 3.89, so I can tell you from experience there is a
difference.  You shouldn't expect, well, neck snapping acceleration, but
mine (stock 1970 2 liter) will do 0-60 in around 10-11 seconds you can
probably add a second or two with the taller ratio.  While not great you
can still feel it in pressing you into the seat slightly.  By the way, the
direct top 3:89 with overdrive engaged works out to about 3.11:1, slightly
taller than the 3.27 direct ratio - with a 3.27 AND overdrive the ratio
works out around 2.62, fairly tall.  So like you said, depends on what
cruising RPM you want -
