As I understand it, the "nose" that the fan sits on is necessary
for stabilizing the crank.  It's a heavy sucker, that's for sure.
I'm told by several E-Mails that the blades themselves can be
removed, but the nose must stay, or be replaced with a harmonic
dampener of some sort.
