First of all, thanks to everyone who responded with advice on the oil
leak. I did as advised, cleaned up the mess, topped up the oil and
started the engine. This time, not a drop appeared from anywhere!!
However, there was definitely one problem - one of the setscrews
attaching the oil sump to the block had obviously come loose and dropped
out completely (at the front of the sump). Another was very loose. This
would explain why the burning oil smell occurred only at certain times
during the last drive - probably when going downhill..... I did notice a
small amount of oil, maybe one drop or two, coming from the crank, so I
guess that that will need looking at eventually, but I really hope that
the problem is due to the missing bolt.
Please tell me that this is a reasonable deduction and that the whole
problem can be fixed so simply!!!
Happy Christmas everyone!!
Bernard.
