I have been unable to find out the specifics on this, but am
interested, as my 1970 TR6 has a hardtop. I don't know whether
or not it is the original top for the car, as the car has a
murky history before I bought it this year. The earliest dated
TR6 hardtop photo I've been able to find is one in Rossi and
Clarke's "TR5/250 and TR6 Companion" on p. 58, which shows a pair
of TR6s with body-colored hardtops. The photo is dated with
November 16, 1970.

The hardtop was designed by Les Moore and Triumph styling,
(not Karmann), according to an interview with Bruce McWilliams
in "The Vintage Triumph" #33 (1982), but makes no reference
to the black / body color switchover. I haven't even found
any definitive record that the hardtops were ever black.
Hopefully somebody who has researched a 1969 restoration will
have more information.
