Pete, you'll need a wire wound potentiometer of the correct value. A
carbon film potentiometer doesn't have anywhere near the current
carrying ability for this job. The result of using one would be a
smoking pot. A wire wound pot is typically called a rheostat.

An electroincs supply company like Newark Electronics carries rheostats.
They also have a web site where you can look up part numbers. On page
846 of their current catalog, they list 25 watt rheostats in a variety
of resistance ranges. If you can measure the resistance from the good
end of your current control to the middle, and double it, you'll have
the approximate correct value for a replacement unit.

Newark lists these things for about $25.
