I guess I should have been more specific.
We were talking about starting an engine that has been stored for a long
period. I squirt lots of oil thru the spark plug hole to really coat
everything. Then, with the spark plugs NOT installed, crank for short
bursts until I see oil flowing up to the rockers. With no plugs
installed, the engine turns over _real_ easy and should get the oil
flowing pretty well. If you have the plugs installed, you will get
nowhere... The compression keeps the RPM's down and the oil pump will
not pump as well.
This takes quite a bit of cranking, (much more waiting for the starter
to cool) and will blow all excess oil out of the cylinders.
Mark is right, if any appreciable amount of liquid is in the cylinder
with the plugs installed, bad things can and will happen. :-(
