I haven't seen the latch moved, but one of my TR6s has
the release pull installed on the right side of the car
(the passenger side for my US-spec car) instead.  As you
have observed, the problem of cable breakage is less common
in UK-spec cars, as the cable is shorter, and doesn't have
to negotiate the sharp 180 turn right before the latch
mechanism.

This wouldn't be acceptable for a concours car, but works
for me!  Actually, I like having the release on the
passenger side, because it's closer to where you need to
stand to open the hood (bonnet) anyway!
