Peter: I had a problem like that once and it turned out that I had installed the litte rubber seal at the front of the master cylinder backwards little rubber O-ring off and turning its face around and reassembling. Brake bleeding was a cinch after that and I have had no trouble in 3+ years since. This may or may not be your trouble but it sure was mine! Good luck.
