Anne asked -

<Is there a simple way to correct this and how does one
access and/or remove the mechanism? >

The right hand side mechanism (on a LHD vehicle) is accessed through an
access panel located on the bulkhead, inside the car behind the cubby box.

Remove the cubby box, unscrew the four screws holding the panel on the
bulkhead (buy another gasket before you do, you will want to replace it) You
can remove the gear assembly by removing the left hand screw to release the
outer guide tube, but only loosen the right hand screw enough to remove the
Left side one - you don't want to loose this shorter tube in the scuttle.

Remove the wiper arm,, unscrew the retaining bolt, carfully pry up the rubber
sealer around this, then from back in the car try to carfully remove the
mechanism through the access hole.

Be careful not to loose the right side tube, be careful not to damage the
inner geared tube.

This mechanism can then be replaced or repaired.

Ck Bently or Haynes, they make this clear.

PS I haven't done it without also removing the wiper moter, alleviating the
need to get the gear box out with the gear tube still in there, hopefully
you won't have to do this.
