One possibility that comes to mind is a bad coil, which could mimic the
exact situation you described. You did say he claims to have spark when
the car dies, but is it still a strong spark?
Beyond that, you might be on the right track in suggesting fuel system
problems, possibly as simple as a vapor-lock situation?
