Nick,

This could be a coil problem.  And heat is a factor.  Sometimes the 
very fine wire in these coils can break.  Yet it can still conduct 
electricity when the wire is at ambient temperature.  As the coil 
heats up, the wire will try to expand, and when it does it breaks the 
connection.  Sometimes vibration will make the connection again but 
most of the time the coil will not work until it has cooled 
considerably.
Make sure the wires to the coil are in good order and are secured to 
the terminals properly.
