It occurs to me that, as someone else suggested, if you have a weak 
engine mount, something may have
shifted and the distributor or the vacuum advance may have been whacked, 
thus throwing off the timing,
especially under load.  I would take a careful look at the distributor 
and verify that the advance mechanisms
are working correctly.  Get out your timing light and watch the timing 
marks under load.  That might give you
a clue.  I agree with your initial thought, based on the engine 
behavior, that it sounds more likely to be
ignition related.
