You say the cable looks the same except for the nut. There are no
exceptions here, either it is an exact replacement part or it's not. Will
that nut fit your speedometer? There is a large difference in the size
between the nut that attaches the speedo cable to the Tiger vs Alpine
speedometer.
The square inner cable sticks out of the speedo cable about 1/2
inch, the gear slides over the square cable then over the steel end on the
speedo cable and the clip holds it on the steel end. If you do not have a
steel end on the new cable exactly like the original cable that the gear can
slide onto and also has a hold down metal arm that will attach to the
transmission case; you have a wrong cable.
The speedo cable for the Tiger has Ford spec ends on the cable; Ford part
number for the cable is C4JU-17260-A.

yes it has all that, and i have the gear off, and the cable is the
correct one. Right now the new cable looks the same on both ends, well
except for the nut which goes on the speedo. And i do have the gear
off, but the clip that holds the gear on, cant hook to anything, cuz
there is just the speedo cable, which is too small for it to hook too.
And the thing that the clip hooks too is what im talking about. Thats
what i need to get off, and i cant. So............. i guess if no one
else knows how/ or what, then i will take it to a shop here and see
what they can figure out.
thanks Joey

Speedometer cables rarely come with a drive gear because there are
several different tooth count gears Ford used for all it's production
lines.
There should be a spring clip that holds the gear onto the outer cable
end
and that is all you need for the new cable to make it work. The
speedometer core cable is square which fits into the square hole in the
gear.
Are you sure you have the correct replacement Speedo cable? It should
look
exactly like the one you removed, same size, same diameter, same length,
same end fittings.
You may need to post a picture of this so we can see the problem.
