Hi Jim:
Yah. My understanding (usually suspect :-) ) is that on the early upper
arms the ball joint sort of sticks out (less arm around it), which lets
you run wider rims--or maybe it's larger rims--or both, without making
contact with the edge of the upper arm.
Smitty or Bob Palmer could likely explain it better than I just did--I
think Bob has that setup on his Tiger.
