In drag racing, a properly designed traction bar system will lift the rear
end during acceleration. Along with the subsequent weight transfer to the rear,
this will push the rear tires harder against the pavement for greater
downforce and increased traction.
As Bob stated, one of the main problems with most solid mounted traction bars
(Dan Walters included) is that they promote lots of nose dive under harder
braking.
The CalTrac design is a very nice solution...it provides bite during
acceleration and does not jack the car (accentuate dose dive) under
deceleration.
