Roland,
Right you are, but those "easy to change" cable end gears come in a
limited range of teeth, and are a rather coarse adjustment as they
usually have about 14 teeth, and you can only change them by a full
tooth. That's about 7%, and doesn't take care of non-linear errors over
the range of the speeds.
